Missing Children

Project 1

Missing Children Epidemic Child abduction cases are something that many people talk about because it is a major concern for most parents. One way to solve this epidemic of missing children is to inform more people about the dangers, warning signs, and general information on child abduction. The missing children epidemic is something that needs to be addressed more commonly by parents of young children. This is an incredible epidemic that is continuing on every single day, if more parents were informed of the dangers of kidnappings and how they happen it could change society for the better. One way to make sure that children don’t get kidnapped is to make them aware of their surroundings. A child that is unaware of their environment or is in an unfamiliar environment is easy targets for kidnappers or even human traffickers. The best way to prevent minors from these dangerous situations is to have parents talk to their kids about the dangers and risks of strangers and potential kidnappers. From a young age, kids should be aware of the “stranger danger” rule, and that they should never talk to or follow an adult they do not recognize. A newer method is to have a “safe word” with the child if an adult approaches a child have them ask the person for the safe word, if said person cannot recite the safe word the child knows this is not a trusted adult. The department of justice wrote an article for parents about kidnappings, a quote from the article states “The words “Missing Child” call to mind tragic and frightening kidnappings reported in the national news. But a child can be missing for many reasons, and the problem of missing children is far more complex than the headlines suggest” (U.S. Department of Justice). Kidnappings can be way more complex than just a simple taken child. There can be custody battles, misunderstandings, family disputes, and many other reasons. For example, most kidnappers are middle to older age men (Dowshen). This can also happen when the parent is not aware of where their child is. The best ways to prevent kidnappings are being aware of the conditions in which children get kidnapped, online safety, having all documents in order, and most importantly watching the children. The conditions where minors are most commonly kidnapped can vary from case to case but the most likely reason for a child to be kidnapped is another parent who does not have custody of the juvenile. They usually believe that the juvenile is not getting their needs met therefor they take it upon themselves to kidnap this child to take better care of the minor. Teaching online safety is also important, many teenagers and older kids in today’s day and age have a free range of the internet and many social media platforms. Many perverted men use social media to despise themselves as younger girls to gain the trust of young teenagers. One thing about online safety is not to take all online access from teenagers but to teach them how to tell if someone is dangerous on the internet and social media. Another thing to be weary of is posting the children online. Before a child gets kidnapped, they could be preyed on if there are many pictures of the minor on social media sites. The best way to avoid someone having picture of the juvenile is by avoiding posting them online to public accounts. There is a way to help children that are already kidnapped is to spread awareness of the child that has been taken. When a child is kidnapped most news sources recommend having them broadcast photos and videos of the child so people can be on the lookout for someone who could’ve taken them or the child. One big worry of most parents is strangers’ kidnappings their youngsters but in reality, most kidnappings happen with other family members. Only 25 percent of kidnappings happen by strangers. The other 75 percent happen by family members that do not have custody of the child (Kraut). This could be grandparents, biological mother or father, aunts or uncles, and siblings. One quote says from an article based on kidnapping says, “Children under the age of 6 are most frequently targeted for family abductions and these often occur amid bitter divorce or child custody battles between parents” (Kraut). A reason that family kidnappings are more common than stranger kidnapping is because the children usually are familiar with the perpetrator since they are family. This makes the children more likely to voluntarily go with this person. Young children who do not know that the person taking them could be dangerous are more vulnerable to being kidnapping. Children do not have their brains fully developed therefor they cannot comprehend the dangers of being kidnapped. There are various forms of media used to spread awareness for missing children, these include news broadcasts, articles, social media sites, and by word of mouth. In recent years, social media sites have been adequate for missing children to be found. Many people on a day-to-day basis will go onto social media sites more than turning on the news. One can also spread awareness through social media much faster than the news broadcast. People also tend to wonder why children get kidnapped in the first place, the main reason being through sex trafficking purposes. Every 40 seconds a child gets taken; this means up to 840,000 children go missing every year (Flores). These statistics are much higher than most would think. Some more statistics include that 81 percent of missing children are 12 years or olde (Flores). In about 40 percent of cases the child is killed (Flores). In only 4 percent the child is not recovered (Flores). One quotes from the health journal says “School-age children are at greatest risk on school days before and after school and after dinner time” (TheHealthyJournal.com). These times include 7am-9am, 3pm-4pm, and 6pm-7pm (TheHealthyJournal). This is interesting because if society is aware of these times, they could keep closer watch on their youngsters before and after school. These also could be the younger children left unattended when walking to and from school. Some famous kidnapping cases have helped to spread light and make the system for how the forces will help parents with kidnappings now. One example of a case that changed the system is Amber Hagerman. One quote from Family Minded says “In January 1996, 9-year-old Amber Hagerman was riding her bike in the parking lot of a grocery store in Arlington, Texas, when an unknown kidnapper snatched her and drove away with her in his pickup truck. Her body was found floating in a creek five days later” (Familyminded.com). Her story changed things because after she was found they created something call an AMBER alert. This stands for America’s missing: broadcast emergency response. When a child is kidnapped the government sends out alerts to the state for everyone to be on the lookout of the child or their perpetrator. This has helped many different kids be found through people being able to see the child if their kidnapper brings them out to the public. It is assumed that Amber might have been found if someone had known that she was kidnapped or what she looked like she might’ve been found faster or alive. Missing children are something that is scary for almost any parents especially with today's society but without the AMBER alert and new social media platforms to spread awareness these kidnapped children could have much less of a chance to be found. The new research on kidnappers and what they look like and which children they prey on has helped many parents to teach their kids on what to look for as well. Although this epidemic has not been stopped yet with new research it is headed into the right direction of being solved.

Project 2

Symbolism in Bugs In his novella, “The Metamorphosis,” Franz Kafka, a well-known absurdist author, contends that regardless of circumstances people must adapt to survive. He created an analogy filled with symbolism at the heart of the story. For example, he argues that one must choose the life one wants, or their life could change for the better or worse. Additionally, he symbolizes the everyday working man by presenting a realistic vision of repetitive day-to-day life. Within this story, Kafka wanted to express the issues with the repetitiveness of the average working-class man. Kafka presents many different forms of symbolism in the novella “The Metamorphosis.” He starts the story with a man who is overworking himself to pay off his parent's debt. Kafka works in the same place, the same way, every single day. This symbolizes how many people live their daily life. A large portion of society does the same thing in the same place as their work; many people have been found to grow weary of the repetitive lifestyle. The protagonist is known as “Gregor Samsa.”One day throughout the story Samsa wakes up as a very large insect. Comparatively, this is important because when people think of bugs, they usually are grossed out, but bugs are everywhere, just like people. They are scurrying in every corner of this planet, ordinarily this is a big symbol of how many different people are with bugs. One quote about how humans need their sleep states “Human beings have to have their sleep” (Kafka 1.5). That quote could be a symbol that means when a human does not get all of their sleep, they could have bad things happen to them. When someone lacks a lot of sleep, they tend to start having hallucinations or fall asleep very easily. Admittedly, this is important for someone to have a functioning life. When Kafka talks about how much sleep someone needs, he is implying that Samsa could’ve not gotten enough sleep, accordingly this is why he woke up as a bug. Subsequently, this makes the audience look at how they live their own lives and how much sleep they get. If someone is not getting enough rest maybe, they will want to change their lifestyle to make it easier to either go to work or school. Another thing that Kafka presents to the story is to show the audience analogy between the bug and the amount of work throughout the story. The author wanted to show the audience that people must adapt to the new environment that their lives have brought them. For all these reasons, this can be very difficult for some people depending on what they have gone through. Change can be important, if someone were to do the same thing every single day it could get very repetitive. The analogy is very big for this story because the reader has to interpret a lot of the story due to it being an absurd fiction story. As a result, the story could be interpreted many ways to different people but that depends on how to audience reads the novel. Many people could read this and take a look into how life looks for the readers, maybe it is a home or job but someone might want to change this about their personal living situation. The characters within this story talk about how their town does not look the best. One quote states “The town itself, let us admit, is ugly (1.1.2). Most people think of bugs and become grossed out since they could believe that the bugs are “ugly” but these creatures actually make things and have communities of their own. Having the analogy of a bug is very important to the story as this is not something many people enjoy to see around the world. For example, the morning that Samsa wakes up as a large insect he tries to continue life as he normally would, but this is extremely unexpected and is a very difficult change for him. His life changed just overnight. Kafka is showing the audience that someone’s life could change so quickly and unexpectedly it could be hard to keep up with that change. Undoubtedly, this is something that could easily happen to anyone. Finding yourself after a traumatic event can be very difficult. Samsa had to learn how to live with this new life, he struggled through learning how to live with being a bug. Relearning how to live after a traumatic event is one of the hardest things someone can go through. Kafka wanted to show the audience that even after everything that could happen, he shows that one could still live a somewhat normal life. Kafka also makes use of irony in the novella. When he was writing this story Franz Kafka also worked a very long and difficult job. He was not a writer full time and he worked in a similar way as the protagonist in the story. The author worked a very repetitive job when he was also writing which made Kafka not become famous until after he had passed away. In comparison, this is ironic because in the story “The Metamorphosis” the main character hates his life and job, and it brings up wonder from the audience if the author also did not like how he lived. Before Samsa’s metamorphosis, his wife used to call him a “dung beetle” One quote states, “In the beginning, she also used to call him over to her with words she probably considered friendly, like, "Come over here for a minute, your old dung beetle!" or "Look at that old dung beetle!" (Kafka 3.8). This is ironic because one day after a long day at work he did wake up as an extremely large dung beetle. He worked so tirelessly for his parents to have a nightmare one day and wake up as a large bug. It is found later in the story that his parents had a “Nest Egg” which is a large portion of the money, and they did not need him to pay off their debt at all. He was being used for his work ethic the entire time. The irony is such a big part of this story as this happens so often in the world with many people who want to help others but come to find out their work ethic was being used the entire time. There is mostly situational irony within this story with his work and Kafka working in a very similar way. That situation alone is a big part of why this story is different from most, as they have such similar lifestyles until the protagonist’s life changes so rapidly and drastically. The audience can see how much of a change this is for him and they could interpret that if they want their own lives to change, they must do something about it. When people read this story most of the time their first thought is going to be “why would he write about this?” but, after looking more in-depth into how this was written and the importance of what happened in the story, they have a completely new understanding. This is an odd situation when reading but the symbolism with the bug and how much the protagonist was working really can change how someone might look into their own life. Having an extremely repetitive life can be very exhausting and difficult for someone. The story “The Metamorphosis” was a very long and challenging read but this story showed so many important life lessons in a very unique way.

Reflection Essay

Reflection Essay Within this course, I have been working to improve my writing as much as possible before I move on to the next chapter of my life. My very first project was very rocky, to say the least. I worked pretty tirelessly to get this project done on time but in the end, I definitely still should’ve read into my topic even more than I did for the first time. I choose the topic of Missing Children” and finding a solution to this epidemic was difficult for me. I realized about halfway through this essay I needed to change something and I choose to do more research and really try to solve this problem. I tend to go off-topic and start writing more of a research paper than finding a solution. This was my biggest flaw other than the fact of my grammatical issues. In addition to, my first project I did go off of topic quite a bit and had to remind myself of where this paper was supposed to be heading. One quote from Professor Hammett states that “This paragraph should be about awareness of surroundings” (Professor Hammett). I started to write this paragraph and did not continue with the topic I was supposed to be writing about. I went off and wrote about the different types of kidnappers and more statistics about them. This leads to another issue with my formatting. Another issue I ran into was that I did not quote all the facts that I had found. After my first submission, I ended with a “50” due to accidental plagiarism. I had to go back and revise what I had written and add all of the citations with these. Another suggestion from Professor Hammett was that “Citations must match exactly to what is on the WC page” (Professor Hammett). I found that I needed to add more research throughout the essay instead of just adding them to the works cited page. After I had fixed this we also found some grammar errors so another thing I can work on is putting my work through more different grammar checkers. I changed this part for my project two to get hopefully get better marks in that department. I found many different grammar checkers for my future essays and I will be using these in the future. There were many mistakes in my essay this semester and I might not have improved as much as I could I have learned a lot with these projects about topics I have never researched before. I looked into these issues and attempted to change these for my project two. I don’t know how successful that I was with this but I did try my best. I have learned a lot and I think this information will help take me through many more essays with my college experience. These corrections that Professor Hammett offered were extremely helpful throughout my future essays.
